BTEC Extended Diploma in Computer Games Design
WHY
TAKE THIS COURSE?
During the course, you will learn by completing a range of exciting
and varied assignments based on workplace situations and activities,
both technical and creative, that are fundamental to the Computer Games
industry. You will also have the benefit of being able to interact with
your tutors and of visiting industry professionals. In the second year
you will have the opportunity to create a final public exhibition showcasing
the best of your work.
As well as learning about employment in the Computer Games industry,
you will develop the skills you will need to progress to Higher Education.
WHAT
WILL I STUDY?
You will develop relevant Art and Design and Information Technology
skills and produce work using industry standard software and techniques
including: 2D and 3D game design; concept art; animations; game merchandising
and digital image editing. You will learn how to work effectively as
part of a team; and most importantly develop a strong appreciation of
traditional visual communication skills such as observational drawing.
HOW
WILL I BE ASSESSED?
Units of work are internally assessed and verified through assignments
set and marked by your tutors; others form part of the Final Major Project.
When you have completed all the units of the course you will receive
an overall grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction.
WHAT
SKILLS AND SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?
You will need 5 GCSEs grades A-C including a grade C GCSE or better
in an Art and Design related subject or Information Technology with
an element of design. However, a passionate interest and commitment
to the subject are also major requirements for success.
WHAT
CAN I DO NEXT?
This course is for students with ambitions to progress into any of the
numerous roles available to them in the Computer Games industry such
as: Games Designer, Programmer, Graphic Designer, Storyboard Artist,
Character Animator, and 2D/3D Modeller.

Understanding and commenting on the current industry trends is a vital
part of the course and you will be encouraged to participate in visits
to industry-led exhibitions to enrich your own practice. We also invite
speakers from Universities and from industry to talk to you about career
paths. A large proportion of the assignments are ‘live’
- set by industry professionals who have a very clear idea about the
skills you will need to develop to succeed in this ever expanding area.
