AS / A2 Drama

WHY TAKE THIS COURSE?
This exciting course is aimed at experienced and talented dramatists. You must be interested in all aspects of theatre, including acting and directing. It is designed for those who wish to explore different styles of theatre practitioners and the ability to study and develop an in-depth knowledge of set texts.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?
You will study three different play texts in the AS course, one of which will be performed to an audience. You will also have the opportunity to perform a monologue or duologue, which will be externally examined. Written coursework is an important part of the AS and A2 course and you must be able to write theatre evaluations based on theatre visits throughout the year. In A2 you will devise a piece of theatre based on a given stimulus. You will explore the history of theatre and will develop your analytical skills by studying and practically exploring a text in preparation for the final written exam.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
As part of the AS year you will be assessed practically and by the submission of written coursework. You will explore two contrasting plays using different practitioners and provide a written analysis in the 3000 word coursework. You will also submit a 1000 word theatre evaluation on a play that you have seen. The second unit is performance based with you participating as an actor in a group performance of a chosen play and either a monologue or a duologue. In the A2 the first unit is performance based. You will be assessed on your rehearsal process as well as the final performance. You will also submit supporting written coursework that discusses the process you have been through. The second unit is the written exam based on a set text and how theatre has developed throughout history.

WHAT SKILLS AND SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?
To get the most out of your time on the course, you must be extremely committed and focused. You must have excellent time management and have the ability to study independently. Full attendance and participation is essential. You must also have the ability to evaluate live performance. It is recommended that you have experience of performing. A grade C in English and Drama is required in order to excel on this course.
