AS
/ A2 Media
Studies
WHY
TAKE THIS COURSE?
Wherever you go and whatever you do, you can’t escape the media.
Media industries are amongst the biggest in the world and are most people’s
source of entertainment and information. Relationships with audiences
are things which merit study and Media Studies has become one of the
fastest growing subjects in recent years. If you have a strong curiosity
about all aspects of media, then this is the course for you.
WHAT WILL I STUDY?
For the AS course you will study various aspects of television, print
and a detailed case study of one media institution. You will be taught
the terminology and skills needed to complete thorough analyses of television
dramas looking at such things as camera angles; construction of mise-en-scene;
narrative structure; and representation. You will also focus on media
institutions and how they are developing and adapting to a digital environment.
This module involves completion of a short case study which you will
use to answer questions in the exam. For your coursework you will individually
work on the construction of a new Music magazine.
The
A2 course builds on and extends the knowledge and understanding you
will have gained during your first year. As part of your A2 coursework
you will create a documentary, working as part of a small group. In
your exam you will reflect on your coursework, justifying decisions
you made and demonstrate your understanding of media concepts. You will
also study contemporary media texts, industries, audiences and debates.
HOW
WILL I BE ASSESSED?
The course is evenly split - 50% exam, 50% coursework each year.
WHAT SKILLS AND SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?
As a student of Media you will work as part of a small group, as well
as being able to work independently. You will also be expected to work
to strict deadlines, which is the case in any media industry.
WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?
There are numerous degrees to choose from in all aspects of the media.
However, if you decide not to pursue the subject to degree level, the
course is excellent preparation for other degrees, in terms of methods
of study and learning used throughout the course, which will be of benefit
to you whichever course you choose to follow. Alternatively many of
our students progress directly to employment in all aspects of the media
industry.
PRIESTLEY EXTRA
