AS / A2 Spanish

WHY TAKE THIS COURSE?
After Mandarin, Spanish is spoken by more people than any other language in the world today. Spanish embraces a wealth of cultures since as well as Spain, it is spoken across Latin America and there are even 44 million Spanish speakers in the USA.
With increasing competition for places at University, a student with AS or A2 level Spanish will really stand out from the crowd. More and more Universities are asking for a qualification in a language as a basic entry requirement for a range of courses. Languages combine well with all other subjects at Priestley.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?
For AS Spanish you will study topics such as the influence of music and fashion on our lifestyles and other issues which affect young people’s lives, for example peer pressure, bullying, drugs and alcohol.
In the A2 course you will study social and environmental issues. You will also study two Spanish films and Spanish literature.

HOW WILL I BE ASSESSED?
One oral and one written examination for both the AS and the A2 courses. You will also be assessed by your teachers throughout the course, so we can see how you are progressing and provide support where needed.

WHAT SKILLS AND SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS DO I NEED?
You should have at least a GCSE grade C in both Spanish and English Language and a minimum average GCSE pass of C. You should have sat the Higher Tier GCSE Spanish examinations. You will continue to develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills as you did for GCSE. You will learn to express your ideas and opinions on the range of topics we study. There will be a much greater emphasis on Spanish grammar to help you to understand and use more sophisticated language.

WHAT CAN I DO NEXT?
Careers in Business, Marketing, Journalism, Law and the Tourist Industry all demand good communication skills, and the ability to speak a foreign language will give you the edge when applying for jobs.

PRIESTLEY EXTRA
You will have the opportunity to do a week’s work experience in Spain. You will be able to participate in excursions to A level film and study sessions at the Cornerhouse cinema in Manchester. You will be able to attend University 6th Form Days and Spanish AS and A2 topic days.
