Working with Children in Early Years and Primary Settings

REASONS TO TAKE THIS COURSE

The course is designed to provide you with the knowledge and understanding of different aspects of development of children from birth to 11 years. There is a growing demand for those working in the early years sector to have a high level of knowledge and capability to nurture and educate young children There are opportunities to be employed in many different aspects of early years – primary teaching, working within day care centres/nurseries, teaching assistants, childminding, nannies, social care, nursing,  plus many more. This qualification covers a range of key subject areas that provide learners with the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to care for and educate children aged between 0 and 11 years 11 months old. It has been designed to support learners to progress onto level 3 qualifications across a number of sectors, including the early years educator sector, the supporting teaching and learning sector, and the children and young people sector.

WHAT YOU WILL STUDY

You will study units focusing on Play and Learning, The role of the childcare practitioner, Physical development and physical activity, Nutrition and Exploring legislation within the early years sector. As well as your practical evidence portfolio within placement.

HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED

To gain this qualification, you  must achieve a minimum of a Pass grade in each of the six  units. These units will be internally assessed and graded Pass, Merit or Distinction.

•Placement is also included, the college will support and organise this for you. This will be completed over a minimum of 120 hours of placement in a real work environment and will be assessed by the supervisor college assessor in an early years and primary school setting.

• A synoptic short answer examination, which will be undertaken at the end of the qualification. This will be externally set and assessed, and will be graded Pass, Merit or Distinction.

During your one day a week placement you will,

  • Support and care for the children’s learning and development

  • Work closely with staff

  • Learn and develop your skills and knowledge

  • Observations

  • Assessments

  • Planning

  • Practical Evidence Portfolio

PROGRESSION

The Level 2 qualification is nationally recognised by employers and can lead to work in the Early Years  Sector, as you will gain a certificate in Working with Children in Early Years and Primary Settings.  This pathway will support entry to job roles such as such nursery assistant, classroom assistant, preschool assistant.  In addition to this you can also progress on to Level 3 qualification at Priestley.
