Priestley is a centre for the Duke of Edinburgh Award – the world’s leading achievement award for young people.
As an operating authority for the award we are able to independently run the course. Activities and residentials can be organised around exams to make sure everyone has time to fit in their studies and DofE.
Head of Sport Nigel Howells, who runs our DofE activities, said: “All young people should be given every support necessary in order for them to achieve.”
The Duke of Edinburgh Award’s goal is to create a world where young people can reach their full potential whatever their circumstances.
It provides a balanced programme of activities that develops the whole person – mind, body and soul – in an environment of social interaction and teamworking.
Its ethos is to enable every young person of every background to do their DofE and succeed, regardless of any barriers.
Reasons to complete the Duke of Edinburgh Award
DofE is about helping you along the path to a productive and prosperous future. As many of our participants say, it’s life-changing.
Achieving an Award will give you skills, confidence and an edge over others when you apply for college, university or a job.
Beyond your academic achievements, universities want to see evidence of so called ‘soft skills’ that you have developed through extracurricular activities, such as communication, commitment, leadership and teamwork. Your DofE Award is a fantastic way to demonstrate and evidence these skills in practice.
You’ll also make a difference to other people’s lives and your community, be fitter and healthier, make new friends and have memories to last you a lifetime.
What is the Duke of Edinburgh Award?
A life-changing experience. A fun time with friends. An opportunity to discover new interests and talents. A tool to develop essential skills for life and work. A recognised mark of achievement; respected by employers.
14-24 year-olds can do a DofE programme at one of three progressive levels which, when successfully completed, leads to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.
There are four sections to complete at Bronze and Silver level and five at Gold. They involve helping the community/environment, becoming fitter, developing new skills, planning, training for and completing an expedition and, for Gold only, working with a team on a residential activity.
How You Will Be Assessed
eDofE is our digital system where participants record your DofE programme and activities online, and get each section approved by your DofE Leader. Once you enrol, your DofE Leader will set up an account for you in eDofE and you’ll then be sent an email with your signing in details. Then you’re ready to activate your account and start choosing your activities and setting objectives.
On eDofE you can easily select what you want to do for each section, and get your DofE Leader to approve your choices and Assessor. You can check your progress throughout your programme and submit evidence in a variety of formats. You can message your DofE Leader and other participants in your group from within eDofE.
Qualities you will need to take the award
Any young person can do their DofE – regardless of ability, gender, background or location. Achieving an Award isn’t a competition or about being first. It’s all about setting personal challenges and pushing personal boundaries.
You will need good organisational and time management skills, commitment, dedication, a sense of humour and the ability to work with others
You can do Bronze, Silver or Gold Awards. You can go straight onto Silver or Gold without any prior experience!
Think about the time scales though as DofE requires a huge commitment so make sure you can complete the award for which you are applying.
Gold takes 18 months, Silver 12 months and Bronze six months.
You need to be 16 to take Gold, 15 to take Silver and 14 to take Bronze.
What will it cost?
There is a cost – to cover the cost of expedition practice sessions, expedition assessment and your log book.
Please note if you have any financial concerns we will endeavour to help you.
Gold costs £160, Silver £120 and Bronze £80.
