Course length: 12 weeks

Why take this course?
This course is split in to two parts. The first six weeks cover the basics of digital photography followed by six weeks of photoshop. Ideally learners would do both parts of the course however, if you feel your photography skills are well developed you can opt to join the second part of the course for photoshop.
Adobe Photoshop is one of the creative design industries’ leading and most widely used software package for image editing and design. This Digital and Manipulation course will introduce you to a broad range of techniques using the latest software on PC platforms. The course content includes practical exercises and demonstrations through which you will learn various tools such as filters, layer masks and cloning tools to create high standard imagery. You will be encouraged to use your own photographs and work towards producing a strong professional portfolio on completion of the course.
Digital Photography topics include:
- the exposure triangle
- focus and depth of field
- the principles of composition
- critique sessions of presented artists’ works
- discussions of the work made by students within the class
Photoshop topics include:
- Overview of Photoshop and using the software.
- Photoshop basics such as dodge, burn and adjustment tools
- Discussions on the philosophy/ethics of image editing
- Introduction to ‘layers’ and the general Photoshop workspace/workflow
- RAW file processing
- Multiple exposures using layers and blending modes
- Sharpening, smoothing and removing blemishes on a portrait using layer masks and clone/patch/spot healing brush tools
- Making structural changes to images using adjustment layers, cloning tool and transformations
Who will this course suit?
This course will suit learners who are first-time users of digital photography and Photoshop and those who already have a little experience. Although principally targeted at learners who wish to develop their skills as a hobby, the course will also be of interest to anybody considering a career in the photographic industry e.g. as a freelance photographer, photo editor, photographer’s assistant or technician.
Ideally you will have your own digital camera with a lead for transferring images onto the computer. It is also possible to use digital images sourced from Pexels.com if you don’t have your own images.
You will need your own USB memory stick so that you can store your edited photographs.
As you will be working with a computer, you must have basic IT skills: You need to be able to create new folders on a PC desktop, save images and use menus. Some understanding of how to use Photoshop would be an advantage but is not essential. See the checklist.
Your tutor will use each class to introduce a new technique. As the classes are only 2 hours long, if you have Photoshop at home you will practise your skills between the college sessions in order to get the most out of the course.
Your work will be personal to you, so above all you need to be prepared to “have a go” and experiment with different ideas.
Is there a qualification at the end of the course?
There are no formal assessments, but your tutor will review progress and provide individual feedback throughout the course. We will ask you to review your learning to make sure that everything on the course is meeting your expectations.
