Reasons to study this course

  • Explore your interest in art and design in a 1-year, immersive experience
  • Focus is on lessons of a practical nature as an alternative to a more academic route

WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO TAKE THIS COURSE

  • Three GCSEs at grade 3 or an example of your own art work
  • An interest in art and/or design
  • A commitment to education and willingness to get stuck in to practical workshops and sketchbook work

What you will study

The course comprises of four projects completed over the course of one year.

You will learn skills in a range of specialisms including drawing, painting, printmaking, textiles, ceramics, photography, and moving image.

You will be expected to produce practical work in the art studio and keep a sketchbook with notes, planning, research and reflections.

You will participate in live projects, exhibitions, attend trips.

At the end of the year you will produce a ‘Final Major Project’ of your choice and exhibit your work in the Priestley Summer Show.

How you will be assessed

Formal assessment of your sketchbook, research and practical work at the end of each project. A ‘Final Major Project’ is externally moderated and determines the overall qualification grade of Pass, Merit or Distinction. Submission includes sketchbook work, practical work and a final exhibition.

You will have the opportunity to use the wide range of studio facilities available at Priestley College, including printing equipment for etching, block and screen

Progression

On completion of the course you have the opportunity to apply to relevant L3 courses including AS and Vocational qualifications at Priestley College. Your performance on the course, alongside existing qualifications, will be taken into account in your application. Information on apprenticeships or employment opportunities will also be available.

Reasons to study this course

  • You will study customer service, communications, finance and selling. You will also get the chance to learn about the travel and tourism industry.

What you will need to study this course

  • You should have a range of GCSEs at Grade D/E or 3/2 in English and Maths with at least one GCSE at Grade C or Grade 4 and an average GCSE score of 3 or better.
  • You will also need to have a keen interest in your chosen vocational area and be determined to succeed.

What you will study

More than 50% of your programme will be made up of a vocational specialism leading to either a BTEC Level 2 or OCR Level 2 qualification.

How you will be assessed

Most of the vocational Level 2 programmes are assessed through coursework and external assessments. However, some programmes are assessed through coursework alone. For your coursework assessments a variety of methods will be used including written work, oral presentations, posters, group tasks and, where appropriate, practical performance.

Priestley Extra

Alongside your main vocational programme you will be able to take one or more of the following:

English and/or Maths up to GCSE Every student who does not have a GCSE Grade 4 (Grade C pre 2017) or above in English and/or Maths will have to work towards achieving a Grade 4 whilst some students with a Grade 4 could choose to aim to improve to a Grade 5 or above. For those with a Grade 3 this will mean taking a one year re-sit programme whilst those with less than a Grade 3 will be able to take a pre- GCSE course to develop your skills. To help us place you on the right English and/or Maths programme all students without a GCSE grade 4 in English and/or Maths will be required to take specialist diagnostic assessments. (see page 28 for details of GCSE provision).

Many students who already have a GCSE Grade 4 or above in English and/or Maths will also be able to take the Higher Project Qualification. This course will help to develop your all round study and research skills based around a personal project of your own choice. If you make an excellent start to your time at Priestley you may be able to take this at AS Level (the Extended Project qualification) to give you a real head start when you move on to Level 3 work.

All students at Priestley are able to take part our broad range of enrichment activities including sport teams, the Duke of Edinburgh Award and performance groups.

During this course you will study units which will introduce you to basic techniques of print production, photography, television and film and there is one unit which involves the detailed study of a media product of your own choice.

Health and Social Care (OCR Level 2)

Reasons to study this course

Level 2 Cambridge Technical qualification in Health and Social Care is a GCSE equivalent course that develops transferable skills which are essential in the workplace or for further study at L3. The course will take up 2 blocks and can be studied alongside other courses including GCSE English and Maths. You will also complete a work placement within a Adult Care setting,

What you will study

Level 2 Cambridge Technical in Health and Social Care uses direct experience to help students develop the underpinning knowledge as well as practical and personal skills required to work in this sector. They learn how to deliver person-centred care and support to meet the needs of a variety of service-users, this is achieved through placement experience and within the classroom.  You will also study Health and safety requirements, key information about Anatomy and Physiology and how to support  individuals with different care needs.

How you will be assessed

Assessed with practical assessments in your work experience, reflective practice from work experience, coursework and there are also two online exams based assessments.

Priestley Extra

You will have opportunities to take part in enrichment activities including Sign Language, First Aid and also wider College activities. Educational visits and experiences are frequently undertaken by the department, whilst within College day visits, conferences and guest speakers are frequently used to enhance learning. You will be encouraged to undertake work experience and DBS clearance will be sorted prior to placement experiences and will be funded by the College.

Progression

The Level 2 qualification is nationally recognised by employers and can lead to work in the Care Sector, as you will gain a certificate in Adult Care . Completing the qualification will gain the learner with  a Certificate  in Adult Care Assistant.  This pathway will support entry to job roles such as Support Worker or Care Assistant in domestic, residential and other care environments. In addition to this you can also progress on to Level 3 Health and Social Care.

Sport (BTEC Level 2)

Reasons to study this course

The Level 2 Certificate in Sport is a vocational stepping stone into the sports industry. The course is equivalent to 2 GCSE’s and gives you the opportunity to develop a range of skills and techniques essential for success in the sports industry. On completion many students progress on to a level 3 Btec or an A level programme, apprenticeships or employment.

What you will need to study this course

  • to be actively participating in sport
  • to be hard working
  • to be capable of independent study
  • to be enthusiastic about participating and leading in a range of sporting activities
  • the ability to manage time and meet deadlines

What you will study

You will study a mixture of internal and external units. The externally-assessed units cover fitness for sport and exercise and anatomy and physiology for sports performance. Internally-assessed optional units will include; Practical Sport, leading sports activities, training for personal fitness, lifestyle and well-being, injury and the sports performer and profiling sport performance.

Throughout the course you will have the opportunity to undertake a variety of specialised study visits, interact with guest speakers, residential experiences and a range of practical activities, to complement your programme of study. We also encourage students to gain work-based and volunteering experience in the local community. We provide a number of opportunities to do so with Warrington School Sports Partnership.

Progression

On completion of the course at merit grade you have the opportunity to apply for Level 3 progression within Priestley choosing from a selection of AS and BTEC courses. There will also be the opportunity to gain information on apprenticeships as well as employment opportunities
