Composites, metals, polymers and timbers and how their different properties suit different products and processes. Green and sustainable design, biodegradable materials, methods of production, inclusive design solutions.

Individual products and how they relate to modern manufacturing systems, ICT in manufacturing and Product Design, the work of designers as well as human needs and factors.

How you will be assessed

50% exams, 50% coursework

Year 1 (AS) – coursework set using exam board themes as a starting point.

Year 2 (A-Level) – self-set project assessed by your tutor and moderated by the exam board.

In Year 2 you will expand on your chosen specialism and work as part of a team.

Year 1 you will cover eight units. 1-7 are formative. 8 is the graded FMP.

Visits to games degrees at universities across the country, as well as visiting speakers from universities and industry to discuss career paths. ‘Live’ assignments and ‘game jams’ set by industry professionals, such as d3t. The program is designed in conjunction with industry professionals to make our students job-ready and highly skilled.

Progression

Students typically go on to study at some of the UK’s top Game Design courses at university, with most students gaining their first choice. Strong ties have been made with Bolton, Falmouth, Salford, Futureworks, Staffordshire and UCLan universities. Specialist pathways have included Game Design, Game Art, Game Concept Art, VFX, Animation, Game Programming, Software Design, Content Creation and Graphic Design. We also have the potential to offer a paid internship with a AAA games company. In the past we have worked successfully with TT Games and we are now in discussions with Arthur Parsons at 10:10 Games and d3t.

In 2022 our Year 2 BTEC dance students were joined by those on our enrichment course and together they produced a stunning performance of Fallen Women. It was choreographed for camera and captured by Luke Video  after hours of rehearsals. The final result was a stunning piece of work made possible by the dedication of the dancers and our incredibly talented Productions Arts students. Fallen Women takes you on a journey back to the darkness and despair experienced by the women who were incarcerated within the Irish Magdalene Laundries for many, many years.

What you will study

Year 1 (AS) – one unit coursework, consisting of three projects. These projects explore rural and urban environments, personal space and a mock examination question.

Year 2 (A-Level) – comprises of a personal creative investigation unit and an exam course work unit. A-Level students will exhibit their work professionally in the Priestley summer show

How you will be assessed

Informal assessment throughout. Formal assessment at the end of each unit. At the end of the course, you will exhibit all your work. It will then be assessed and externally moderated.

Progression
