Football physio achieves his goal

A FORMER Priestley College student is now helping keep some of the most talented young footballers in the country fit and healthy.

Ryan Davies is a physio at the Nike Academy at St George’s Park National Football Centre where many young players in pursuit of a professional contract train.

“It can be extremely challenging and a high-pressure environment, but it is also increasingly fulfilling and rewarding knowing I have contributed to the team,” he said.

“Hopefully that results in positive outcomes during competition and maybe even in the long-term futures of these young players.”

Footballers from around the world compete for Nike Academy places and all have to prove their potential against top professional clubs.

Scouts are monitoring their performances every week in matches which, in the past, have been against the likes of FC Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

For Ryan, who grew up in Newton-le-Willows, being a part of the team is the result of his own hard work and dedication.

“Working in sport does not wait for anyone and you have to be pro-active, fast thinking and driven to cope with the daily demands,” he said.

“However, if this is your career choice opportunities will present themselves. You just have to take the chances when they come along and you’ll have a stimulating future ahead of you.”

Ryan, a former St Aelred’s Catholic School which became part of Hope Academy, completed a BTEC in Sport and Exercise Science at Priestley College before completing a three-year BSc Physiotherapy course at Leeds Metropolitan University.

Since graduating in 2012, he’s been an assistant physiotherapist at Lancashire County Cricket Club and first team physio at Notts County Football Club.

Now he is working with some of the most talented footballers in the country.

“I can’t believe how far I’ve come in such a short space of time,” said Ryan.

“I knew early on at Priestley that I wanted to concentrate on being a sports physio so to achieve my goal is very rewarding.”
