Some amazing results for our student scientists in their Biology, Chemistry and Physics Olympiads.
Congratulations to everyone who took part, not only your achievements, but also your commitment to taking on these challenges as extracurricular challenges.
In the Royal Society of Biology’s Olympiad our students joined others from around the country to take part in two, 45-minute multiple-choice papers.
Former Penketh High pupil Oliver Bellian was in the top 10% of students when his results came in, earning him a silver medal. Bronze medals went to Josephine Muir, Bethany Meulman and Katie Dale meaning they were in the top 15% of the 18,533 students who participated. A further five Priestley students were highly commended.
Priestley’s young chemists also impressed in their RSC Olympiad including former Irlam and Cadishead Academy pupil Stuart Roberts who secured gold, finishing in the top 8.2% of students.
The competition is aimed at second years, but several of Priestley’s first years took part and achieved medals.
Alfie Allen and Owen Leung both secured silver, meaning they were in the top 33% of the 16,216 students who took part.
Also collecting silvers were second years Billy Cave, Dean Edmondson and Sean Melia. Bronze awards went to first years Blake Barnes and Jaycen Ledgerton.
Priestley’s Physics cohort also impressed in the British Physics Olympiad. This challenge included a message on the front of the paper that said: “If you find the questions hard, they are.”
That didn’t deter our students who impressed across the board. In the senior challenge for Year 12s, 53 Priestley students entered and 94% received a medal place.
