Priestley’s Lecture Series runs weekly on Thursday afternoons in our Autumn and Spring Terms. The presence of a lecture series that brings together teachers, early career researchers and professionals helps to give the Priestley cohort an insight into where their intellectual curiosity can take them.

Liverpool Scholars Programme
Lydia has been working in widening participation and outreach since 2013. The University of Liverpool is committed to supporting talented students who wish to access higher education, regardless of their backgrounds. To support this goal, the Widening Participation and Outreach team run two Year 12 access programmes, Liverpool Scholars and Realising Opportunities.

- Richard Jones – 9th Oct
- Journalism and Media Literacy
Richard joined the University of Salford in 2023 as Director of Journalism, Politics and Contemporary History. Before becoming an academic, Richard was a journalist for Sky News, the BBC and a range of radio stations. He also established the award-winning Saddleworth News hyperlocal website. He will be in college to discuss all things journalism.

- Cardiology
Caitlin is a specialist Cardiac Physiologist based in North West England. She is passionate about making a difference and helping others; medically, globally and within her community.

- Natalie Woods – 23rd Oct
- Sutton Trust Pathways
Former Priestley student Natalie went on to attend the University of Liverpool, where she pursued an iCASE PhD project funded by the MRC DiMeN DTP. Her doctoral research is focussing on understanding how uveal melanoma cells manipulate the immune system. During her time at Priestley she was an ambassador and studied Biology, Chemistry and English Language.

- Patrick Clarke – 6th Nov
- Careers in Politics
Patrick was a caseworker for Ashley Dalton MP and went to Oxford where he studied an MA in Modern British History. In his role as a caseworker he was primarily responsible for the management of Ashley’s constituency diary. He also had some responsibility for communications and the administration of casework.

- James Edgington – 13th Nov
- NHS
James Edington of The Christie Foundation will be in college to discuss careers in the NHS. His talk will be entitled ‘Biomedical Science: An Insight Into Disease Diagnosis Behind The Scenes’ and will give an insight into the role Biomedical Science plays in healthcare, the different avenues you can take with a degree in Biomedical Science and also a look at the different disciplines that you can work in.

- Engineering and Sustainability
With over 7 years of experience, Bryony specialises in driving positive social impact across the transport, infrastructure, built environment, and environmental sectors. Her focus spans socio-economics, social value, inclusive growth, and sustainable infrastructure projects.

- David Barron – 27th Nov
- Science and Engineering
David is from the Worley Group which is looking to bridge the gap as we accelerate to more sustainable energy sources, while helping customers provide the energy, chemicals and resources society needs now. His lecture will focus on science and engineering.

- Tom Wilson – 11th Dec
- Sociology and De-industrialisation
Tom is a PhD candidate in School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research at the University of Kent. His study focuses upon exploring sustainable industrial culture within the deindustrializing district of the Chatham Dockyards in Medway, England – an area that has undergone extensive deindustrialisation since 1980.

- Prof Mark James – 4th Dec
- Sport and Law
Mark is one of the country’s leading experts on sports law and Olympic law. His first appointment at Manchester Metropolitan University was in 1997 to lecture in criminal law and sports law and to develop its innovative MA (Sport and the Law). He is now Director of Research in the Law School at Manchester Met.

- Mike Peacock – 19th Mar
- Bogs, lakes, climate change and nanoplastics
Mike is a biogeochemist with interests in carbon, nutrient and greenhouse gas cycling in wetlands, peatlands and freshwaters. He is particularly interested in the role that small, constructed waterbodies (ditches and ponds) play in the global methane budget. Mike also researches the effects of peatland restoration and rewetting on greenhouse gas emissions and water quality.
