Two Priestley students have seen articles published by one of the largest newspaper groups in the UK.
Jon-Paul Wakefield and Amelia Davies have both written features for the Young Reporter scheme ran by Newsquest, which publishes local papers such as the Warrington Guardian.
JP said it was a great opportunity after completing his Journalism course at Priestley to build his portfolio.
“I found out about the scheme through my tutor and it was something to help me keep my hand in,” he said.
“We had the scheme introduced to us and had defamation explained, it was really useful.”
JP and Amelia completed their Journalism qualification with Priestley College last year and are now in the second year of their A-Levels.
Both saw the scheme as a way to develop their journalistic skills and each month have the chance to report and write an article, which they submit to the Guardian for consideration.
JP, who studies English Literature & Language, PE and Sociology, hopes to go into sports journalism, combining his passion for both football and writing.
The former Culcheth High pupil is hoping to secure a BBC apprenticeship after college – following in the footsteps of Priestley student Erin Ivey who achieved this goal last year.
The 17-year-old already writes his own football blog ‘That Red Feeling’, which chronicles the highs and lows of being a Manchester United fan.
“I love to write and seeing a story come together after you have done an interview or completed some research is really satisfying,” said JP.
