As you come to the end of your Year 11 journey, it’s completely normal to start wondering what comes next? Do you stay at your school’s sixth form, move to a new college, or explore something completely different like an apprenticeship? With so many options and plenty of advice coming from teachers, parents and friends, it can be difficult to know what the right choice really is. Sometimes, the most helpful perspective is hearing from someone who has already been through the process and found a place where they truly feel they belong.
As Year 11 comes to an end and the future creeps closer, it’s normal to begin to question what comes next. When deciding on a college, I didn’t just want somewhere with strong academic results, I wanted somewhere with character. Priestley College is lucky enough to be surrounded by vibrant, student-friendly areas that enhance college life. Outside of the wonderful facilities within the college (such as the Learning Resource Centre, Viola Beach cafe, and Crescent cafe), there are countless local cafés, shops, food spots and green spaces nearby that give students room to study, socialise and recharge.
If you walk 20 minutes in one direction, you’ll find yourself in Warrington town centre, giving students independence and choice. Not fancying a rice box on Thursday this week? Head down to Warrington Food Market and try some of the varied options available! Need a last-minute present for mum’s birthday? Run to Golden Square at the end of the day (results of this may vary, it has a very high chance of annoying mum if she finds out). Having shops within walking distance builds time-management skills and encourages responsibility – important qualities for life beyond college.

If a busy town centre isn’t your style, or you only have a short break, you can take a quick stroll to the student favourite – you guessed it – Morrisons! Not only is it great for a quick snack fix, Morrisons is also incredibly useful when your last pen runs out in class, you need a new notepad, or you need more flashcards without draining the bank. Easy access to supplies supports organisation and preparation, which are proven to improve academic performance and reduce last-minute anxiety.
So you’ve had lunch, you’ve got all your revision resources, but you’ve stayed in the LRC for one hour too long and you’re looking for a change of scenery. You’re in luck! Stockton Heath town centre is 10 minutes up the road and full of cafes, full of fellow students looking for a different place to concentrate. A change in study environment is proven to improve focus and memory, as different surroundings can stimulate the brain and prevent burnout. A personal favourite of mine is a study session in Starbucks with friends and a cool iced latte in hand. If Starbucks isn’t your favourite, there’s also Coffee House for you to relax and get some work done in. Studies show that moderate ambient noise can actually boost creativity and concentration. Cafés are also a great way to balance productivity and social connection, which supports motivation and overall wellbeing.
College life isn’t just study, study, Starbucks, study; it’s important to avoid burnout and take some time for yourself. A great way to take some time away from the textbooks and websites is taking a wander down the Trans Pennine Trail, offering a perfect escape into nature. Walking outdoors has proven benefits: it reduces stress levels, improves blood flow to the brain and boosts mood through endorphin release. Taking regular study breaks in natural surroundings helps students return to work feeling refreshed and more productive.
What makes being a Priestley student so enjoyable isn’t just the four walls that make the college, it’s what lies beyond as well. From supermarkets that make life easier, to cafés that create motivating study spaces, to nature trails that protect your wellbeing, this corner of Warrington truly supports both academic success and personal growth. For some Year 11 students, the idea of having so much independence and so many places nearby might sound distracting, or even a little overwhelming at first. However, these opportunities actually help students develop important life skills such as time management, responsibility and balance. When you want to try something new for lunch, get some new supplies, grab a coffee with friends or simply clear your head, rest assured that everything you need is within a 15-minute walk of campus, and that balance is what makes the Priestley experience so special.
